Over the past three decades, the Karnataka Hemophilia Society (KHS) has achieved significant milestones, setting a benchmark for comprehensive hemophilia care in India. These achievements are a testament to KHS’s commitment to improving the lives of people with hemophilia (PwH) and their families.

Pioneering Care and Treatment

  • Established the Karnataka Hemophilia Care & Hematology Research Centre in Davangere, providing:
    • Diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation under one roof.
    • A dedicated Coagulation Laboratory, Physiotherapy Unit, Counseling Services, and Hydrotherapy Pool for advanced care.
  • Home-based hemophilia treatment through a Mobile Service Unit, ensuring timely care during emergencies like brain bleeds.
  • Recognized as a Comprehensive Hemophilia Center by the Government of Karnataka.

Advocacy and Policy Impact

  • Advocated with the Karnataka State Government to:
    • Procure and provide free anti-hemophilic factor (AHF) medicines in government hospitals, making Karnataka the first state in India to do so.
    • Include hemophilia under the RPwD Act 2016, ensuring disability benefits for PwH.
    • Allocate 14,000 sq. ft. of land and release ₹50 lakh funding to develop hemophilia care services in Davangere.
  • Influenced the Union Government to extend hemophilia care and policies across India.

  • Conducted extensive research and published numerous articles in national and international medical journals on hemophilia care, challenges, and innovations.
  • Organized training programs for medical and paramedical professionals on the diagnosis and management of hemophilia.

Global Collaborations

  • Partnered with the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) under two Twinning Projects with:
    • Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, USA (2004–2007).
    • Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, UK (2008–2016).
  • Won the WFH International Award for Best Twins of the Year 2013 for outstanding collaboration with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Community Engagement and Awareness

  • Created nationwide awareness through partnerships with media, public figures, and community members.
  • Engaged celebrities like Dr. S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, who served as the Brand Ambassador and raised funds through free musical concerts for over 21 years.
  • Organized youth and parent counseling camps, personality development sessions, and psychosocial workshops to empower families of PwH.
