The Humble Beginning of Karnataka Hemophilia Society (KHS)

The Karnataka Hemophilia Society (KHS) was founded in 1989-90 by Dr. Suresh Hanagavadi, a visionary and compassionate medical professional deeply affected by the challenges faced by people with hemophilia (PwH). Inspired by personal experiences and a commitment to address the unmet needs of the hemophilia community, Dr. Hanagavadi laid the foundation of KHS in Davangere, Karnataka.

At its inception, KHS faced numerous challenges, including:

  • A lack of awareness about hemophilia among the general public and healthcare professionals.
  • Limited access to diagnosis, treatment, and essential medications.
  • Financial constraints in providing comprehensive care.
    • Despite these challenges, KHS began as a small initiative driven by a group of dedicated individuals united by their mission to improve the lives of people with hemophilia. With limited resources but immense determination, KHS took its first steps toward becoming a beacon of hope for PwH in Karnataka.

    Bridging Gaps in Hemophilia
    Treatment and Support

    Comprehensive Care

    KHS started providing essential services, including diagnostics, consultations, treatment, and rehabilitation for people with Hemophilia. Over time, these services expanded to include state-of-the-art facilities & multidisciplinary care services.

    Advocacy and Government Collaboration

    One of KHS's most significant achievements has been its successful advocacy with the Karnataka State Government. This led to free treatment for Hemophilia patients, including the procurement of expensive medicines at government district hospitals. KHS's initiatives influenced similar programs across India, replicating Karnataka's success nationwide.

    Recognition and Impact

    Over 34 years, KHS's consistent efforts have been recognized at both national and international levels. It has become a model center for Hemophilia care in India. The society's approach of involving the community, media, and public has played a crucial role in raising awareness and mobilizing resources.

    Establishment of Hemophilia Care & Hematology Research Centre

    Under the leadership of Dr. Suresh Hanagavadi, the society established the Karnataka Hemophilia Care & Hematology Research Centre at Davangere. The centre offers comprehensive care and serves as a research hub for Hemophilia and

    Capacity Building and Public Awareness

    KHS's journey includes a strong focus on building awareness and capacity through training programs for medical professionals, workshops, and public campaigns. Celebrity involvement, such as with Dr. S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, helped draw public attention to the cause, aiding in fundraising efforts and education about Hemophilia.

    Patient-centric model has transformed lives by offering continuous free consultations and support to patients with Hemophilia and other rare bleeding disorders. The holistic approach encompasses medical, psychological, and social care, empowering patients and their families to manage their conditions better.
